Pricing the new range
Captured on 31 October 2026 with Claude through the AlmondTill connector; the figures re-read from Harbourline’s records on the same day (every one listed below).
What Harbourline's new spring shirts and jackets should sell for, what last season's shirts and jackets made, and a three-step markdown for last season's jackets — the margins shown at every step before anything is set.
The assignment
“Price the new spring shirts and the two jackets. Our target margin is 58%, round to our usual price points ending in 9, and check what similar styles sold at last season. Then plan a three-step markdown for last season's jackets starting in four weeks. Show me the margins at every step before you set anything.”
What it used
- The seasons on file: the current season, FW26; last season, SS26, 1 February 2026 to 31 July 2026; and the coming season, SS27, from 1 February 2027. A window counts as a season of the range when it spans at least 120 days, so the shorter windows on file do not.
- Every style and category on file — 7 pages of styles and 1 of categories — so the new range is the styles of the coming season and last season's jackets are last season's styles in Outerwear.
- The products and variants of the new range and of last season's jackets (19 product walks, 20 variant walks), and the supplier rows behind the new range — the list cost of each variant, the lead time, the minimum — over 2 pages.
- The stock position of every new variant at every store, and of one item per jacket style at Harbourline Yorkville with the landed cost of what is there — 36 walks.
- The price windows on file: one page of the house's own windows, two of them followed back to their product, and the price history of one item per jacket style — 18 walks.
- Last season's sales by category, read in two halves, and its middle month by style — 91 report pages.
- The markdown plans, the price lists, the price groups and the accounts on file.
- 363 calls in all, every one through the connector.
The target margin, the price point, the markdown's start and cadence and the trade margin are the merchant's own words: a margin of 58 percent, price points ending in 9, a markdown starting 28 days out with 21 days between its steps — 10 percent off, then 5 and 5 percent more off the running price — and a trade list at cost plus 25 percent. The rounding up to the price point, the cut of the markdown into plans, the dates of its steps and the cost-plus prices are the assistant's arithmetic over the engine's figures: the lowest price that reaches the margin is rounded up to the next whole-dollar amount ending in the house's digit, a plan over the engine's caps is cut per store floor and then per department, each step falls the set number of days after the one before, and a trade price is the list cost raised by the trade margin.
The proposal
The new range is 3 styles and 20 variants, every one priced from the supplier's list cost up to the target margin and then up to the house's price point: the shirt at C$109.00, the two jackets at C$309.00 and C$279.00 — margins of 58.4, 59.2 and 58.9 percent, each at or above the 58 asked and each under the supplier's suggested ticket. Last season's jackets have been off sale since 31 August 2026; put back on sale at the price they last sold at — half their ticket — and marked down in three steps, every one of them ends at a margin of 5.3 percent against the stock's landed cost, with 0 steps at or below cost. The markdown is cut into 8 plans, one per store floor and per department, each under the engine's caps.

The shirt comes from Harbourline Manufacturing (Vaughan), the two jackets from Port Dover Outerwear Ltd.; the list cost is the same on every variant of a style, and so is the ticket. The price point is the smallest whole-dollar amount at or above the lowest price that reaches the margin whose last digit is the house's.

Last season's jackets are 16 styles and 190 variants. Their last price window ended on 31 August 2026 and nothing followed, so they have been off sale since; the ladder starts from the price each style last sold at — 50.0 percent of its ticket. Their supplier rows are not on file for a past season, so every margin here is taken against the stock's own landed cost at Harbourline Yorkville — the weighted-average cost of what was received. The first step comes 28 days after the capture day, 31 October 2026: 28 November 2026, then 19 December 2026 and 9 January 2027, each step off the running price.

The engine takes at most 250 items and 500 price moves in one plan. The whole scope is 760 items — 190 variants at 4 store floors — and 2,280 moves over the three steps. It took 3 tries to cut it under the caps: one plan over every floor carries the whole scope; one plan per store floor still carries 190 items with three moves each, over the cap on moves; one plan per store floor and per department fits. Harbourline has two Outerwear departments, the women's and the men's, so each floor gets two plans — 8 in all, each with the same three steps:

Before any plan is scheduled, last season's jackets go back on sale: every store position of the 16 styles — 760 in all — gets a price window at the price its style last sold at, open to the house's standing end, 1 January 2099, because a markdown moves a price that exists and the lapsed goods have none. Then the 8 plans are scheduled. Both wait for the merchant's yes.
The follow-ups
“Our corporate account needs a price list at cost plus 25% for the shirts. Set it up for their price group.”
The trade price group on file has 3 accounts in it. The list prices every new shirt variant at cost plus 25 percent: a list cost of C$45.38 becomes C$56.73 a shirt, the same on all 10 variants. The till prices each sale from the item's own weighted cost as the goods are received, so the figure here is today's reference from the supplier's list cost. The list itself was rehearsed through the connector — 1 dry run, nothing written. Two steps wait for the list's id and the merchant's yes: an entry per shirt variant at cost plus the trade margin, and the binding of the group to the list.
The exceptions
- The layout marks no online store for the range, so the 4 store floors are priced and the online store is priced by hand.
- Last season's jackets have no supplier row on file — a past season's goods — so the ladder's cost is the stock's own landed cost at Harbourline Yorkville on every style, read from the position itself.
- 0 steps on the ladder fall at or below cost. Every style of the new range carries one list cost and one ticket across its variants, so no style was refused for a mixed cost.
- Last season's sales were read in two halves — the engine pages a season by the month — and added; the middle month alone names the siblings.
- 89 rehearsals went through the connector: 80 sale prices for the new range's store positions, 8 markdown plans and 1 price list, every one the engine's dry run shown back with its token; none was confirmed. Before and after: 1 markdown plan on file and 1 after; 0 price lists and 0; 0 price windows on the first new position and 0.
What stayed the merchant's call
The assistant set nothing. Every sale price, every markdown plan and the price list above were rehearsed as the engine's dry runs and shown back with their tokens; none was confirmed, and the margins were shown at every step before anything was set, as the merchant asked. The target margin, the price point, the markdown's start and cadence and the trade margin are the merchant's own words. The rounding up to the price point, the cut of the markdown into plans, the dates of the steps and the cost-plus prices are the assistant's arithmetic over the engine's figures, and the merchant can change any of them. Last season's jackets go back on sale at the price they last sold at before the markdown is scheduled; both wait for the merchant's yes, as does the trade list. The owner's own session, with these prompts put to the assistant, follows.
